An eighties echo, but amplified, streamlined, and anthemic. Think cruise control on a Summer-burnt Autobahn, joyously windswept at redline. An oddly cathartic church bell drives an ocean of emotions to a pinnacle of exaltation under far-too-convenient foot-pedal control.
“I took my medicine
The voices won’t stop
My shadow’s caving in
My feet won’t walk”
Originating as John Kunkel’s dorm room imaginings after immigrating from Uraguay to Los Angeles, The New Division would be derived from two of his utmost influences, New Order and Joy Division. Never intended to be permanent, the name would stick with the systematic formation of a full band and accompanying audience.
“My watered, teary eyes
My lips are unsealed
My hollow, empty skin
… I’m losing my mind”

.
“I try to create some kind of meaning, but a lot of the songs I end up writing don’t have any specific meaning, per se. They’re kind of more like a collage of words that I think go well together. It’s funny cause a lot of them end up being about really dark subjects and dark topics and I think it’s because a lot of dark words sound cooler than singing about things that are happy.“
And referring to single “Modus“, “I think this was the most fun to work on. I fell in love with the chord progression right away and the lyrics, melodies came so natural. It’s rare when that happens, but when it does it’s the best feeling in the world.“
“He’s reaching uncontrolled
He’s reaching outside
I’m walking down the halls
To somewhere I’d die”
The track breathes gentle hopefulness into an unmedicated bipolar nightmare. Internal voices that needle to control, bear witness to self-fulfilled prophecies of increasing instability. The only thing worse, a slow death of ceaselessly drugged and dreary zombie-esque days.
“I tried to walk the lines
To regain control
But every single time
… I lose it all”

I love how this song evolve and its power. It was fascinating to listen as it was interesting the interview.
Agreed. I love the blissful crescendos and the underlying darkness. I’m glad you enjoyed it, Butcher, and thanks for sharing!
Darkly beautiful and cinematic!
Agreed. They do a pretty fantastic job of building peaks of euphoria from rolling hills of anguish (I might use that on Twitter, lol). Thanks for sharing, Jeff!
