IżoL ~ A Lonely House [2⊘2⊘]

Lovely statuesque Caitlin Stokes, lead singer of previously featured band Corlyx, remarked on the number of bands that successfully mimic other extremely popular bands, and it is difficult to argue with her pedigree. Further, it is impossible to argue as far as Depeche Mode is concerned. Bands such as Camouflage, Cause & Effect, Mesh, and M.I.N.E. have built extensive audiences by mining that same “fast-fashion” melancholy darkwave vein.

Enter IżoL, a solo project and nickname of Robert Jezewski of Poland, began in 2015 after his previous band Ice Machine, a tribute band named for an early Depeche Mode track. Robert is not only the author of the lyrics and music, but also a producer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist. As IżoL he has released three full albums, The Vagabond’s Wish (2017), Control (2019), and Beautiful Thing (2021), multiple singles, and has a new album currently in the works.

Robert’s musical repertoire began in the 80s/90s when he attended music school where he learned to play the accordion and piano, sang in the school choir, and performed in all-Polish and international competitions. Since childhood, he has had a fascination with music, and been a modular synthesizer enthusiast, which should be clear from his gorgeous synthetic creations, both brilliantly executed and supremely catchy.

Song “A Lonely House” is as a smooth-running synth engine that drives undulating pulsations of winding grooves above velvety-voicing of melancholy lyrics to a love forlorn yet still desirous. A gently mysterious maneuvering explicitly designed to pique the interest of those of us sporting deeply darkwave-encrusted veins.

    1. I love the whimsy with which YouTube occasionally throws me some group like this, a near unknown from Poland with so much talent. Thank you, my friend.

  1. I have the first (possibly only? I have no idea) Cause & Effect album, courtesy of my wife, who was a big Depeche Mode fan and thought their song “Another Minute” was a Depeche Mode song the first time she heard it. Personally my favorite song on that album is “Echoing Green”. It also sounds like a Depeche Mode song.
