Gia Ford ~ Poolside [2⊘23]

We have all known music releases that have underperformed despite an obvious intensity of effort and beauty apparent in the work. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it is sometimes enough to cause bands to dissolve due to largely unrecognized efforts met with heart-crushing frustration. What do you do when you have created the finest masterpiece you can imagine and it is misunderstood, underknown, or outright ignored? Despite creating exceptional art, despite sharing to and cultivating a following, and despite working at peak passion, sometimes the timing is just off. Sometimes the world just steadfastly, unfairly refuses to listen.

With her classic dark and brooding eyes, Gia Ford expresses just such sentiment in a Rolling Stone article: “I was getting frustrated at how difficult it was. I felt like I was doing everything correctly, but no one was noticing it or recognizing all the work that I had put in.” It is an all too common experience, oft-expressed in the Calvin Coolidge quote, “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

Ford, aka Molly McCormick, works hand-in-hand with her girlfriend Melony Lemon, aka Melanie Lehmann, incorporating her life partner’s visual art talents in blended realizations of music video inkiness. They are an intoxicating combination apparent in track “Poolside“, a memo to an internal dialog many of us frighteningly harbor.

The track parallels Ford’s foreboding eyes, incorporating a depth of field altogether raw and hauntingly dangerous. Expressing the mismatched give and take, the inequality between giver and receiver; an inequity easily resolved using the dankest of means, with dumb luck all too often the deciding factor of direction.

    1. An apt comparison — both are beautiful with similar art. Love the juxtaposition of haunting and angelic voice too. Thanks for sharing, I appreciate it.

  1. I tried to play the video, but it says “An error occurred.” So I went to her YouTube channel and “Poolside” isn’t there!
So, I’m listening to “Falling in Love Again.” Very soothing, dreamy voice, and kind of retro’90s, along the lines of Sarah McLachlan.
I’m going to try again later for the “Poolside” video. I wonder what happened?

      1. I’ve temporarily embedded the video until Gia Ford gets the video fixed. You should be able to watch the video now on this page. Thanks, Maryanne!

    1. Thanks, Butcher! I really enjoy the dark theme and the haunting melody. Her voice is icing on the cake. Best to you, my friend. 💀

    1. Yep, YouTube served it up to me, apparently, when she had just posted it and before she took it offline. I was wondering why my link worked, but not for everyone and you couldn’t search to find the video either. Got a lot of hits here from Google from people wanting to see it before I took it offline too. I’ll see if I can post that pre-save link, thanks.
