The Horrors – Still Life

Sporting a sound at once a mix of shoegaze, post-punk, and goth, The Horrors released this lollipop-swirly emotion-laden piece of neo-psychedelia on their 2011 album Skying. Ethereal and timeless, the song appears to sing one who is pining for a lost love and a reminder from each to the other that they will meet again. “The moment that you want is coming if you give it time.” Though unable to respond, they continue waiting … Continue reading The Horrors – Still Life

Fragrance – Heatwave

Fragrance founder Matthieu Roche from Paris, France, released this track “Heatwave” on his debut EP Dust & Disorders in 2017. The video footage is taken from the 1950 movie “Where Danger Lives” and works appreciably well given some cleverly-layered film choreography. Dark, dreamy, and mesmerizing, this tune is a relaxing retro foray into neo-90’s-synthpop that has me looking forward to future parfums de France. More … Continue reading Fragrance – Heatwave

Agent Side Grinder – Stripdown

Continuing with my pre-Christmas “unconventional” theme, please find this catchy tune from post-punk staple, Agent Side Grinder. Synth, check. Heavy bass, check. 80’s vibe, check. Tenor sax solo… wait what? At once a richly, ploddingly, indefatigable darkwave track and then out of nowhere, BOOM, they throw in a tasty sax solo. “Mind is deconstructing. Mind is … Continue reading Agent Side Grinder – Stripdown

She Past Away – Sanri (Hallucination)

Oddly perhaps, She Past Away has become synonymous with darkwave and goth over their ten years of existence – oddly since their lyrics of “minimalist poetry” are entirely sung in their native Turkish tongue. While unfamiliar to some, Turkish has a beastly beauty all its own and something about those vocals oozes gothic undertones such that when … Continue reading She Past Away – Sanri (Hallucination)

Drab Majesty – 39 By Design

Singer/songwriter Andrew Clinco (aka Deb DeMure) leads this Los Angeles neo-goth band that began in 2011 with three albums out now and a worldwide following. This particular cut taken from their second album Demonstration correspondingly affirms their talent for dark emotion-laden melodies and interesting, albeit at times, mournful lyric choices. “39 By Design” was written in remembrance of the 39 members of the Heaven’s Gate cult (“religious group” according to Wikipedia) that were supposed to have … Continue reading Drab Majesty – 39 By Design
